The Active Investigation on Microdosing Edibles: A Public Health Concern

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is, as of June 7, investigating a series of illnesses linked to the consumption of microdosing edibles, specifically those from the Diamond Shruumz brand. This investigation was initiated following reports of people getting sick, some sick enough to require hospitalization after consumption. The investigation ramped up after another round of illness due to people ingesting the same products. Cases involve people in Arizona, Indiana, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, Nevada, Pennsylvania and South Carolina.

The Products in Question

The products under investigation include all flavors of Diamond Shruumz Microdosing Chocolate Bars, Infused Cones, and Micro Dose and Macro Dose Gummies. These products are available online and at retail shops nationwide, typically those that sell CBD, hemp, and THC products.

The Reported Illnesses

As of June 11, 2024, a total of 12 people in eight states have reported becoming ill after ingesting these products. Of these, ten have been hospitalized, with no reports of deaths. The symptoms reported include seizures, central nervous system depression (loss of consciousness, confusion, sleepiness), agitation, abnormal heart rates, blood pressure issues (blood pressure that is too high or too low), nausea, and vomiting. These cases are being called illnesses, but these products are not giving people an illness. They are making people sick simply by ingesting them, which sounds more like cases of poisoning. Poisoning from a product the FDA is still leaving on the market at this time.

The FDA’s Warning

The FDA and other government agencies are urging consumers and retailers not to consume, buy, sell, or serve these products and to safely discard them if they have them. Parents are urged to discuss this warning with their children and teenagers. If anyone consumes these products and experiences any of the above symptoms, they should contact their healthcare provider immediately and/or the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-12221. Please tell me why the FDA is urging retailers not to sell or serve these products rather than banning the sale of these products?

The Ongoing Investigation

The investigation into the exact cause of these conditions is ongoing, and more information will be provided by the FDA as it becomes available. In collaboration with America’s Poison Centers and state and local partners, the FDA and CDC are investigating these illnesses.

This active investigation highlights the dramatic risks associated with the consumption of microdosing edibles. It also reminds us that just because a product is sold in a store doesn’t mean it is safe. These products haven’t been around long enough to know if they are safe, and they certainly are not safe for teens with bodies and brains that are still under development.
